How to Jerk Without Being a Jerk- clicker dog training
In this video I demo how you can reinforce heelwork by letting the dog tug on the leash (or if you choose not to use the leash- a tug toy). When you make the learning process a fun error-less learning process the dogs start to enjoy behaviors that could otherwise be very dull like heelwork. One of Splash's favorite rewards is a good tug on the leash. But be warned, you first have to teach your dog to let go of the leash and grab the leash when you ask if you want to use it as a reward. maybe there is some kind of online shop?
Awesome vid! Emily would you do a detailed video on how you trained heel? I’ve taught my dogs all sorts of tricks from rolling in a blanket to playing connect 4, but for whatever reason heelwork has always been hard for me. I’m trying to train it with shaping and they know the position, but once I start walking it’s very sloppy and I’m just not sure how to clean it up. I would really appreciate a vid that sheds some light on how to properly teach this fun impressive looking behavior!
@MuttVids i agree. kikopup it would be great if you did
Thank you. It is so much fun to watch you ans Splash playing, even when you are working. I look forward to your next video. Ann
@isdykusii There are a ton on Amazon, as well as many other websites, just google dog clicker …
Love the two paws over her nose and the dance at the end!
That was awesome, I can’t wait to do this with my dog!
five stars

victory dance ♥
Great video! I really like the idea of rewarding the heel with a tug instead of a treat.
@musicofnote1 _ I captured it, but she was very likely to do it after biting the water out of the hose. I m not saying to spray a dog with water- but if they want to bite it then so be it. You can also put cheese on the dogs nose- that they wipe off and eat? you could teach the dog to target your hand and then put it on their nose. I taught splash left and right paws covering her nose and then I asked her to do them both at the same time.
@MuttVids ok
I wrote an article with pics in it though on my website
@isdykusii yes online- or you can use a whistle or a pen that clicks loudly.
Well. Tugging is good if they only tug on the leash when you ask them too! Otherwise its very annoying as its right in front of their face during a walk .
I’m surprised this video didn’t get flamed… yet!
@kikopup Thank-you! It was very helpful! Hopefully our heel will start coming along and looking cleaner!
@kikopup – I’ve tried the hand target and a target stick. She’s just started targeting with her paw – has up to now only sporadically when shaping targeted with her paw, so that’d take awhile yet. cheese on nose would have to be soft cheese, but I’m wondering about fading it out, since fading out the tape also didn’t work. With tape worked -> without tape not. But at least cheese self rewarding, although technically still -R.
My puppy is quite the tugger! haha. Especially when he doesn’t want to go inside, just pulls and then tugs, and then lies down and pretends to be asleep. *sigh* haha.
lol, i like the title of this one!
